Our K-9 Unit is recognized nationally for its innovation and effectiveness, and the money raised from the sale of these calendars will be used by the Richland County Sheriff's Foundation to insure that our K-9 program continues to operate at the highest level possible.
K-9's are evaluated every other year to prove proficiency and we require an outside resource to oversee the evaluation process.
Are handlers and K-9's expected to pass an evaluation only once or are they required to show proficiency in their area of expertise from time to time?

The K-9's assist in area searches, long tracks for suspects or lost persons, locating objects at a crime scene, officer protection, and the apprehension of fleeing suspects.
Canine Unit (K-9) dog and handler teams receive extensive training and provide a wide variety of services including searching for lost or missing persons, drug detection, criminal apprehension and crowd control.
K-9 The Canine Unit currently consists of eight teams: six police service dogs doing patrol work and two narcotics detection dog teams.
