There are signs that Uppland has been an important province ever since the Bronze Age but it was during the Iron Age that Uppland came to be the focal point of Svealand, as Sweden was called in those days.
Neolithic, Iron Age and Roman periods In Neolithic times the fenland seems to have been covered with the old woodland of England, composed mainly of beech and oak, with some yew and pine.
There were Iron Age and Bronze Age settlements on this route near to the River Trent, which have been investigated by the Trent Peak Archaeological Trust, and ancient bridge remains have been found in the gravel quarries on the other side of the Trent.

The Orontes River Valley is the core area of central inland Syrian civilization in the Bronze and Iron Ages BC, with a string of tell sites running along its length, taking advantage of the water supply in a region having a relatively low rainfall.
These sites, occupied during the Bronze and Iron Ages respectively, were excavated in the hope that they would provide some insight into the hitherto uninvestigated area of prehistoric social development in the Mun River basin.
Palaeohydrological studies also continue in the middle Thames basin, where the Oxford Archaeological Unit has discovered the remains of several Bronze Age and Iron Age bridges in a silted former channel of the Thames.
