The thermostat is on "cool." To stop the noise, we move the thermostat to "off" and the noise showly subsides and stops.

The tube carrying compressed gas in not cold (going to the exchanger in the furnace). How can I tell if the compressor is running? Would the compressor already be bad? Is there a relay that controls it? Thanks for your help.
