During the past semester students in her class studied the political history of Chile, focussing on the overthrow of Allende and the Pinochet regime, and they read works by two of Chile's most famous writers, Isabel Allende and Pablo Neruda.
That is why it is ludicrous for journalists like Isabel Hilton to claim that the action of the protesters had similarities with the co-ordinated, CIA-backed action by lorry drivers which helped undermine the left-wing government of Salvador Allende and bring Pinochet to power in the 1970s.
Isabel Allende took the literary world by storm with her 1982 publication of The House of the Spirits , a novel which chronicled four generations of a Chilean family against the backdrop of Chile’s brutal history.

That's also where you will find new or upcoming books by Isabel Allende, Joyce Carol Oates, Carl Hiaasen, Julia Alvarez, Alice Hoffman and Neil Gaiman, all respected authors of adult fiction who lately have turned to the junior set.
