It was a very timely and poignant recognition since August 6th and 9th were the 54th anniversaries of the dropping on Atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan; and the Santa Fe Bypass was being completed to ship nuclear waste shipments to the W.
It was not until the wave of general WWII nostalgia accompanying the 50th anniversary of the British victory at El Alamein that the notebooks of Melinda Pappas, who had personally encountered the Desert Fox, became of interest.
He took part in the 50th anniversary celebrations at Ballarat in 1904 and continued farming till he died at the age of 85 from pneumonia at the Ballarat Hospital in September 1915.
