Most of the great apes, most parrots, most dolphins, even such animals as pigs have shown intelligence to rival small children in formalized tests, and intelligence to rival adult humans in informal tests, like engineering an escape from a cage or manipulating an owner.
Thomas, whose ship did not crash in this version, escapes with Nova and flies home, where he finds his own planet controlled by apes.
