Alot of new innovations like using real pictures for surface textures and backgrounds instead of prerendered 3D graphics or animations.
A website is generally composed of pictures and text and more sophisticated sites can incorporate animation files and even special programs that run in the background.
Optimize in this instance means that all graphics, pictures and backgrounds are compressed to make the files as small as possible without loosing quality.

These are beautiful pictures made by handsewing glass beads into a tapestry with an acrylic painting as the background.
We were particularly interested in their backgrounds; it was exciting to think that we might have a fashion photographer and photojournalist shooting our wedding pictures.
Backgrounds can be solid colour (a pastel shade is best) or single pictures or repeated patterns such as these shown below.

This screen saver pulls Star Wars movie pictures which are used as backgrounds in Rogue Squadron from the game data and shows them randomly, so it requires the game properly installed in your system.
This is because the pictures are different sizes for each of the items and the background enhancements would have to be done to each item that is different in image size.
