Local food banks join as members, but the central warehouse eases their burden by centralizing food solicitation, warehousing, trucking and other services, and redistributing the food to smaller programs without the resources to do so efficiently.
Individual food programs within the regional group have affiliative status within the Ontario Association of Food Banks and the Canadian Association of Food Banks, but the regional group through its duly elected representative to the OAFB and the CAFB holds voting membership.
Rice banks have also contributed to enhancing food security by dramatically decreasing the amount of rice paid by families as interest to private lenders for rice loans during the production season, allowing families to keep more rice for family consumption.
