The battlefield, now known as the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, was established as a national monument in 1886 and was known, until 1991, as the Custer Battlefield National Monument.
To understand Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn it is necessary to understand United States-Indian relations between the years of 1868 when the Treaty of Fort Laramie was signed and 1876 when the Seventh Cavalry rode to doom.
The state is home to seven Indian reservations, famous battlefields such as Little Bighorn (site of Custer's Last Stand), hundreds of museums and even historic ghost towns.
