On bikes used for solo riding (the way most transportational cyclists use their bikes) the importance of light weight is greatly over rated.
Bikers used to come in full leathers and line their custom bikes in front of the shop.
They are designed to be used on bikes with rod brakes , where the brake shoes rub on the inside circumference of the rim.

Honda also used this system on several dual sport and street bikes sold in Asia and Europe.
