Openness can vary from sharing letters or pictures through a third party, after the adoption is finalized, to birth parents having personal contact with the adoptive family throughout the child's life.
In open adoption birthparents ideally keep in touch with the adoptive family and their birth child over the years either through visiting or through letters and pictures.
Often, this means that the adoptive parents send a picture of the child and letter to the birth parents once a year.
