I have placed electronic copies of some of my out-of-print books on algorithms and complexity theory online for students and other people interested in theoretical computer science to download free of charge.
It was on these machines, with the aid of some free architecture books given to me by the Digital salesman, and some freeware software that came from DECUS, that I really started to learn about how computer systems worked.
The problem with this is that the whereas there are standard and free software tools and formats for working with computer programs, there is not necessarily any corresponding set of tools and formats for books, especially illustrated books or books with complex layouts.
