Neither brakes or the rack and pinion steering needed power assistance, the fronts being discs and the rears were drums.
The drum brakes on the Scout Dana 44 rear were trashed, so I figured for a few bucks more I'd do discs.

Drum brakes haul your speed down, but you need to read the road ahead and leave a larger gap between you and the car in front then you would with disc brakes under your right foot.
With drum brakes , fluid is forced into the wheel cylinder which pushes the brake shoes out so that the friction linings are pressed against the drum which is attached to the wheel, causing the wheel to stop.
On drum brakes , the cable pulls on a lever mounted in the rear brake and is directly connected to the brake shoes.
