The great Erie Canal between Troy, New York, and Buffalo had been completed in 1825, and the Ohio and Erie Canal running between Lake Erie at Cleveland and the Ohio River at Portsmouth was hot on its heels with the Cleveland-Akron section being completed in 1827.
The Erie Canal started in 1817 was completed in 1825; it covered a distance of 350 miles across NY state from Albany on the Hudson to Buffalo on the Lake Erie.
