Having index cards sorted by code reference can make browsing through your code references easier, too.
Index cards retrieve documents by performing database searches on the template fields.
Visualize a stack of index cards containing each of these pieces of information on a boxful of documents and you have a database.

There were so few addresses when they first started that they could even use index cards to list the addresses.
Another method is to jot down information on scrap paper or index cards and drop into a shoebox or card file designated for this.
Index cards are easy to work with, both when we are writing them as well as using them to plan our project – several people can work on them simultaneously as a team by simply moving them around on a table or tacking them to a bulletin board.
