Eric Clapton was so much the blues purist that he didnt realize the blues giants themselves werent always so pure: Hendrix relished being a better rhythm guitarist than Clapton and Hendrixs rhythm attack incorporated hot r and b vamping, raw, free-flowing song structures, heavy riffing ("Sunshine of Your Lover"was written after Jack Bruce caught a Hendrix show) and post-Beatles rock and roll noise.
Tom then takes players step-by-step through the soulful bends of Eric Clapton, the whammy bar melodies of Jeff Beck, the landmark stylings of Jimi Hendrix, the unique chord voicings of Eric Johnson, and much more.
This is one of those bands put together mainly for the purpose of showing off the members' virtuosity — not just Eric Clapton's, as Ginger Baker was apparently given to legendarily self-indulgent drum solos (none of which appear on this greatest-hits collection) and Jack Bruce handled vocals as well as bass (no small act of ego to look at Clapton and say, okay, I'm the frontman.
