Steve Riggins,

In short, Java is a modern, object-oriented programming language that is most often compiled into Java Byte Code so that it can be interpreted on Java Virtual Machines , which in turn are programs that run on most computers.
It is therefore possible to view the Java-byte code which the JVM executes as an intermediate code for use by compilers for other languages, such as Ada.
Java source code is only partially compiled when it is turned into a class file or bytecode and the applet or application is then interpreted usually on a remote machine at a much later time by the Java Virtual Machine or JVM.
Dave Simons,
Internet Entrepeneur

Source code for Java applets and for Flash animations is regarded as open code and may be copied and amended for nonprofit instructional purposes, provided that amended code is also treated as open source code.
Dan Toomey,
Computer Salesman

The Java byte code was designed to minimize file size to conserve network bandwidth.
