European legislation on Summer Time has taken the form of directives requiring member states to implement certain start and end dates and times for Summer Time into national law; in the UK this was done via orders under the Summer Time Act, 1972 until 2001; then the European rules were implemented on a permanent basis using an order under the European Communities Act 1972.
