Hartell was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (Posthumously) for heroic actions with the 15th FA Bn during the Korean War, while serving as a Forward Observer.
Eleven Buffalo Soldiers and seven white officers who led them were awarded America's highest military award, the Congressional Medal of Honor, for their heroism on the western frontier.
When a soldier throws his body over another to protect him and loses his life doing so, we award him (posthumously) the Congressional Medal of Honor; however, many nurses made that very same sacrifice in Vietnam, and they received no recognition.
