There were also a thousand narrow (but deep ) creeks cut through the turf that were just wide enough to swallow your front tires and hang your front bumper on the far bank.
I was right in the deep gravel region, in the upper stretches of the main creeks; lower down, where the creeks slope more gently, the gravel spreads out to no more than a foot or a few inches thick.
