I've been given a low mileage (90K) 1981 Dodge Ram 1/2-Ton Pu with the 360/Auto. I'm thinking I can afford to make some improvements to the truck as it cost me nothing. What I have in mind is trying to increase the MPG/performance using EFI, better heads and exhaust. The manual says this engine has 8.5:1 CR but doesnt mention the cyl heads chamber volume. Anyone know what that might be. I'm looking at Edelbrocks Performer RPM heads for this motor with 63cc chambers. Also, is this a flat top piston? If so, like the small chevy, this should bump the CR up to ~10.2:1... am I right? I don't want to have to start buying higher grade gas. I've always heard that with aluminum heads you can run an extra point of compresion with out a problem... is this 'usually' correct? If this is the case, will this motor think it has a cr of 9.2:1 when it really has 10.2:1?... Thanks for any input.
