The DASH diet is based on findings from the "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension" clinical study that found that elevated blood pressure levels can be reduced with an eating plan low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, and rich in fruits, vegetables, and lowfat dairy products.
DASH found that eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy foods with reduced saturated and total fats significantly lowers blood pressure.
The DASH-Sodium study found that the lowest blood pressure levels were in those eating sodium levels much lower than the currently recommended maximum of 2,400 milligrams a day while also eating the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet.
