The Dominican Independence Day which falls around the beginning of Lent, is the occasion for a carnival celebration which draws about half a million people annually to festivities in Santo Domingo.
Independence Day, a patriotic and civic celebration held on the 21st September throughout Belize, also gives rise to festivities in San Pedro.
However, fireworks celebrations were associated with Independence Day celebrations even before the signing of America's Declaration of Independence.
