I really need your help! I received a phone call from someone informing me that I didn't pay off a loan from 1975; which is incorrect. The school was located in Washington, DC and they went under in 1995. I lived in Washington, DC about 34 years and worked in an educational setting. I worked in higher education for 25 years and I faithfully paid the loan off shortly after I started working at Trinity College; which is now Trinity University. I was the designated official for the Dept. of Education student loan verifications when I left my position as Registrar. I have called the office in Lombard, Il. and received no help. Whenever I call; I'm told that the person in charge of my case will call me back; of course; she never does. I have written letters asking for verification that I owe this money. The only thing that I receive is a copy of the loan papers which I signed back in 1975 along with a room full of students that signed the same kind of form. On that particular paperwork indicates there was a different social security number. I have only had the same social security number since the age of 15; which indicates another error. I called the office in Washington and spoke with someone and explained the same thing to her; but she informed me that I had to go back to the people in Illinois. Whenever you call or go online; you must submit your name; birthdate; and I was asked for my s.s.no.; but I don't exist in the database. I don't exist because I paid the loan off before I purchased my first car in 1980. I never could get the lady's name that I spoke to up north; nor did she try to help. I want to know what else can I do because when I moved in 2002; all of those old papers were discarded. By then; if you owed or defaulted on a loan; they would make sure you couldn't buy anything else until you took care of your back debt. I have always paid my bills and I don't understand why this woman would put this on my credit report. Can you help? I would appreciate any help that you can give me. Thank you.
