My mother smoked for 40 years and now is on oxygen. She used to be able to bike and take walks and now she is almost homebound. She has trouble walking 5 feet and we are so scare dthat she is going to die soon. Are there any new advances that would help build her lungs up?

I have developed what seems like a chronic bronchitis. I quit smoking about 18 months ago after smoking for 25 years. I quit because I had a spot on my left lung and the doctor thought it was cancer. After removing it with 1/3 of my lung, they discovered it was not cancer. They then thought it was TB. After six weeks they got the results from the biopsy back and it was an unknown fungus, probably histoplasmosis. My lungs, of course, will never be the same, but about five weeks ago, I developed this deep, dry cough. I have used two different medicines in a nebulizer two to three times a day for weeks. Last week I started taking an antibiotic twice a day and a cough pill once a day. Nothing seems to help. What is going on?
