Dogs and cats should be surgically sterilized to prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as undesirable mating-related characteristics and behaviors.
This is why dogs with good hips don't always produce these good scores in their progeny (offspring) and why we should also take account of progeny scores when planning a mating.
Given there are so many of us dogs and cats in need of new homes, it would have been nice if the book did not devote a chapter to tips on breeding and mating.

When dogs are bred, they mate over a period of several days, and it's possible for some of the puppies to be concieved on the first mating and others on subsequent matings.
The mating together of outstanding champions will produce many pets, so if dogs that are not outstanding are bred, can you imagine what will and does happen as time goes on?
