The device drivers on the Linux/SPARC port have been modified to provide two programming interfaces: the Linux interface (this one implements the same programming interface that Linux has on the Intel) and a SunOS interface.
As the project grew, Torvalds has been relinquishing control over some areas of the kernel (in general, device drivers, ports to non-Intel architectures, file systems, and networking) to other developers.
The I/O drivers are also separate processes (in the kernel, but only because the brain-dead nature of the Intel CPUs makes that difficult to do otherwise)
