There is clear evidence in modern literature on the subject that these horses were instrumental in the creation of such world famous breeds as the Arabian and the English Thoroughbred and in the improvement of breeds of horses in Russia, Europe and the Near and Middle East.
There are several visitor attractions on the island, including the Ocracoke lighthouse and the famous Ocracoke ponies, the spirited descendants of horses that are thought to have been survivors of shipwrecks or left behind by early explorers.
Today there are two groups of these ponies descended down from the only 17 original Arabian Horses in which survived the famous shipwreck.
