0 fax modems support arbitrary ASCII local identifier strings.
Some extensions are fax machines, while others may be modems - yet more detail that you may choose to report on.
These fax modems are generally much better performers than most Class 1 devices, but they still have some idiosyncrasies that can’t be overlooked.

In the future, when updated versions of the ITU facsimile protocols are supported in commercial fax modems HylaFAX will be able to use routing information provided in the protocol to do automatic delivery of inbound facsimile.
Traditional analog modems and fax machines use the audible spectrum.

In particular modems used by your computers and fax machines may operate at a lower speed, BT's CD caller display unit will not operate and you may experience some noise interference on your telephones.
After all modems were originally designed for data and fax applications, voice functionality has been added to some modem models just as an extra sales feature rather than as a primary function.
Fax modems may reside on a single machine on a network and clients can submit outbound jobs from any machine that can communicate with the machine on which the modems reside.
