The Free Software Foundation's Gnu C/C++ (GCC) compiler is the standard compiler for Linux and has become a de facto standard on many other platforms as well.
The Linux kernel uses no code from AT and T or any other proprietary source, and much of the software available for Linux is developed by the Free Software Foundation's GNU project.
Almost all Linux software is completely free along with the source code, and there are many excellent archives of Linux software as well as GNU software and other UNIX-compatible software.
