Hello, can you tell me the name of the tree that has large green/lime fruit that falls off in the fall. The outer part/skin looks like pictures of the brain. I just visited Illinois and the trees were abundant. Thanks

Mike, I live in Illinois and have these "brain" trees ehind my house. I investigated and found that it is called an Osage Orange, and the fruit, which we have always called "brains" is really called a hedgeapple. The tree, it seems is a hedge more than a tree. I have read it is called "Maclura Pomifera". The fruit is not edible, but not poisonous. I used it as decoration for Hslloween along with the pumpkins and gourds. My kids play ball with them. Kind of cool, but quite a mess in the fall. Wouldn't recommend it for a yard perfectionist. It could drive them a little crazy.
