FTP is commonly used to download programs and other files to your computer from other servers, or to upload files to a server, such as a web server.
These FTP files are stored on special computers called FTP servers and file can be transferred from the FTP server onto you home or work PC.
FTP servers are steering away from this behaviour somewhat due to the need to run as ``root'' on unix systems in order to be able to allocate ports below 1024.

How FTP works on our Servers When you signup with Master Sites you will receive a username and password for your Account.
The FTP program is used along with your dial-up Internet connection to upload web pages and images from your hard drive to your web space on our servers.
This means that you can run anything from mail servers to FTP sites from your home or office and you can still use the line for voice calls!
