While playing Pokemon Gold/Silver today(I just beat the fourth gym), I noticed that Nintendo modified two of the character designs.
You can also play your Gameboy Pokemon games using the Transfer Pak the games supported are: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gold, Silver and even Pokemon Crystal.
Interesting to say that Nintendo released Pokemon Gold/Silver at exactly the right date so that Johto Journies premieres two days after.

We will be adding more of the Ruby/Sapphire Pokemon and add the Gold/Silver Pokemon soon.
You get the the Gameboy Color Console in your choice of colors clear purple, solid purple, limited edition pokemon gold/silver or dandelion.
Pokemon Crystal is kind of like a spin-off for Pokemon Gold/Silver, with virtually the same graphics.
