All TCP/IP requests sent to a server require a port number, but when it comes to services such as HTTP and FTP, which have standard port numbers, the browser usually hides these details from the end user.
In TCP/IP and UDP networks, a port is an endpoint to a logical connection and the way a client program specifies a specific server program on a computer in a network.
The code below demonstrates starting a TCP/IP JDBC server on port 9888 of the local machine bound to the given database session.

Sockets are data structures created by using a combination of device IP addresses and reserved TCP/UDP port numbers to indicate connection and delivery service information.
Ports provide a specific and universal location for message delivery, while sockets use the host ip address, port number and the type of service (TCP or UDP) to create a reliable connection.

TCP/Com is designed to expose a RS232 serial port to a TCP/IP port on a network and TCPWedge is designed to do the same job as WinWedge Pro except that it inputs data from a TCP/IP port instead of an RS232 serial port.
Modem emulator that enables TCP/IP networking between an Acorn machine and a Windows PC using the serial ports as the network connection.
Each router port or number of ports needs to be configured to a specific processor, so each application at the property will be able to connect to their processor of choice by a TCP/IP address.
