Local JRS staff members have been a great support to the international staff, easing their early adjustment and facilitating their capacity to contribute, not least by helping them learn Tetum, the commonly used East Timorese language.
This permitted JRS East Timor better coverage of the border areas where returns occur, and also better placement in the districts of Bobonaro and Covalima where a high number of returns are expected in circumstances where reconciliation is problematic.

By July 2002, the mission of JRS East Timor will have been concluded, with the local church, the local Jesuit mission and local NGOs taking over any ongoing tasks.
In the 1960's, he actively supported Martin Luther King, Jr's non-violent tactics and marched with King in the 1963 March on Washington and again in 1965 in the Selma-to-Montgomery Voting Rights March.
JRS Australia also works closely with Mercy Refugee Service, the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office as well as the Australian Council for Overseas Aid and the Australian Council for Social Services.
