Lancasters of Nos 9 and 617 (Dambuster) Squadrons, RAF Bomber Command using 12,000lb bombs put paid to the ship that tied down the Home Fleet for so long.
Lancasters also destroyed the infamous Nazi battleship Tirpitz and were instrumental during attacks on the famous Peenemunde aircraft and rocket research facility.
42 Lancasters were lost out of a total of 346 taking part in the raid amongst them Lancaster ND905 flown by Squadron Leader Swanston and crew.

Flew Lancasters with 97 Squadron (Pathfinder Force) as a wireless operator/air gunner, completing 28 operational missions including the famous raids on Peenemunde and Friedrichshaven.
In 1944 all RCAF squadrons had been equipped with Lancasters or Halifaxes and Number 6 Group gained 415 Squadron for a total of 14 heavy bomber squadrons.
Flew Lancasters with 50 Squadron as a mid-upper gunner, completing 19 operational missions of which the most famous was the Wesel raid.
