If Negro teams were not perceived as legitimate businesses with legal claim to the services of their players, Rickey must have reasoned, the cream of the black leagues' talent could be skimmed off for the major leagues with little or no compensation to black team owners.
Historically, Negro Leagues teams were largely owned by men who derived their principal incomes either from illegal gaming operations or other less than savory pursuits.
The Negro Leagues maintained a high level of professional skill and became centerpieces for economic development in many African-American communities.

According to Negro Leagues great Buck O’Neil, the player that comes closest to matching Charleston’s ability would have been Willie Mays.
There were great players, many who later became stars in the Negro National and American leagues, that were playing in the Texas Negro League and the Southern League back then.

Everywhere the Negro National and Negro American leagues operated, the financial resources and public visibility of black baseball were utilized for the advancement of the black image and promotion of racial justice in America.
Those of us who are fascinated by the history of baseball and the contributions of the men who toiled in the Negro Leagues are keenly aware of the despicable social conditions that subjected an entire race to daily indignity.
It may not be overly dramatic to say that the Negro National and American Leagues were sacrificed on the cross for the sins of white baseball.

Now Negro Leagues Baseball Museum officials are waiting to see just how many professional baseball players will pick up their Legacy Awards in person next month.
