In the beginning, Marilyn Manson went by his birth name as Brian Warner. Brian was educated in a Christian school until his second year of high school. While in the Christian school, he grew his hair long to rebel and listened to Rock and Roll records in secret. He grew up a religious and god-fearing citizen of Canton Ohio. A couple months into his sophomore year, Manson’s family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In his autobiography, Marilyn Manson describes how the transition affected him, saying:
“Christian school had prepared me well for public school. It defined the taboos, then held them away at arms length, leaving me reaching for them in vain. As soon as I switched schools, it was all there for the taking- sex, drugs, rock, the occult. I didn’t even have to look for them: They found me.”
Brian finished high school in Florida, spending his free time writing macabre stories, poems and novellas and trying desperately to get them published any and everywhere, succeeding only once. Brian attended Broward Community College studying journalism and theatre, and he still lived with his parents. Finally at 19, he got a job as night manager at a record shop. There, he was able to access the newest music and review it before anyone else for his colleges’ newspaper. Eventually, he was fired but Brian had found his passion in rock criticism and began working for a local freebie entertainment guide but he was never paid. Soon, Brian was working as a Senior Editor of a glossy magazine by exaggerating his experiences in the business. While interviewing musicians, Brian realized that he would rather answer the questions. When 2 Live Crew made headlines for their explicit lyrics and dirty nursery rhymes, Brian Warner decided to “see if a white band that wasn’t rap could get away with acts far more offensive and illicit.” Taking action, he convinced a club owner to have an open-mike night so he could perform some of his writing since no one was publishing it. People who heard him reciting told him he should start a band because his voice was good. Brian had always secretly wanted to make music, especially after interviewing so many musicians and finding none who wrote intelligent songs. Brian wanted his band to use a drum machine, which was an original concept because at the time, only hip hop, pop and industrial bands used them. Brian’s first band was called Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids, created when he was 21. It was thrown together haphazardly with only one guy who actually knew how to play. Since Brian wanted free press in the magazine he wrote for, he had to come up with a pen name for himself. Brian Warner explains how he created the name in a Tastes Like Chicken interview, saying:
“I don't want to grow up, I want to be Peter Pan. So I decided to create a world where I didn't have to play by anybody's rules, and Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson were the two things that spelled that world out. Phonetically, it's like “Abracadabra”; you know Manson by his last name, you know Marilyn by her first name, and it just goes together like "Mickey Mouse". It says everything; you say "Marilyn Manson" and it needs no explanation. It conjures up such images, no matter what country you're from….my reason for choosing the name is both a celebration and a harsh criticism of America. And that kind of creates the whole contradiction that I thrive on..”
After Brian had gathered the members of his first band and wrote a few songs, they decided to make themselves look as ugly as possible with makeup before performing in Miami where only 20 people showed up at their first show. The antics Brian’s band performed on stage were outrageous, but it drew a crowd and there was always an ironic lesson to be learned by the shocking stunts. Brian also made sure to treat every fan equally, regardless of their handicaps. Eventually, drugs and sex consumed some of Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kid’s band members, so Brian kicked them out and named the new band simply ‘Marilyn Manson’, cultivating a new image and sound from mall rats to punk rockers. Brian picked up new members for his band and they each christened themselves, taking the first name of a female pop icon and the last name of a serial killer. From then on, Brian Warner was no more and Marilyn Manson took over. Ten years later, Manson was the only original member left in the band and at least 21 people claim to have seen the first show.
One of Manson’s first real songs was called ‘The dope hat’, and speaks of a magician performing for an audience, but once he does a trick too slowly and the people see that it is not chicanery(aka trickery), everybody hates him even though they knew it was not real to begin with. I feel this song is about Brian Warner, becoming Marilyn Manson and then being caught like a clown in the spotlight without any makeup on. Nobody is interested in Brian Warner anymore; people just want to hear about Marilyn Manson, the guy performing the music and delivering the interviews. His song lyrics are intended to let you interpret them, and he does not mind if people misinterpret them because he believes that when the person is ready to see the truth, they will. The most surprising thing I discovered after doing this project is that some of the most bizarre lies told about Manson were mundane when compared to the obscene list of acts that actually happened. Manson started a band with only the ability to write unpublished poetry and a background of classic rock music. He made connections with musicians through journalism during his college years and now he’s a successful and rich rock star just as he predicted he would be in one of his first songs ‘Lunchbox’ where he screamed “I wanna grow up/ I wanna be /a big rock and roll star”.
Manson is living proof that you can be who you want to be. There is a Manson song for everyone because the range of styles covers punk rock to glam rock to industrial and everything in between. Humans have connected through music since early civilization and anyone who hates Manson can pull together a band just as easily as he did and figure out whether Manson’s band got lucky, or if there is real talent after all. Manson's song lyrics capture his philosophy perfectly, phrasing the most profound of thoughts simply. He screams his disgust at media hypocrisy in America with sardonic and sarcastic lyrics, unafraid to speak his mind on controversial issues, using his music as a platform. Marilyn Manson has matured with each album, gaining direction and a sense of self that has led him to succeed in several artistic endeavors and careers in the entertainment business as a painter, musician, director, performing artist, journalist, author, producer, poet and director. Manson is far more than just an excellent entertainer and intelligent, stylish guest on television and radio talk shows. No longer is he Brian Warner, lead singer of the band Marilyn Manson, but he has become the image of Marilyn Manson- the man that is the mask, rather than the boy hiding behind it. As a child in Christian school, Manson was taught to dread the coming of the antichrist, but as an adult, he came to realize that anti-Christ was simply a person who did not follow Christ. When Manson learned to walk on his own, he overcame his fear and created his third album that signified his metamorphosis from cherished boy to feared man, titled 'Antichrist Superstar', explaining:
"When I first conceived of Antichrist Superstar, I set out to create an apocalypse. But I didn't realize it was going to be a personal one. As a child, i had been a weakling, a worm, a follower, a small shadow trying to find a place in an infinite world of light. In the end, in order to find that place, I had to sacrifice my humanity- if you could even call such an insecure, guilt-ridden existence humanity. I had to shed my skin, purge my emotions and experience every extreme. I had to keep throwing myself onto the swords until I didn't feel a thing. But in trying everything, all I discovered was that I didn't need any of it…. As the drugs drained out of my system, humanity-tears, love, hate, self-respect, guilt- was rushing back to me, but not in the same way that I remembered it. My weaknesses had become my strengths, my ugliness had become beauty, my apathy to the world had become a desire to save it."

Now, for some background on the new bassist, Tim Skold. Just incase you didn't know, he is a very talented musician himself. Born in Sweden he started out in Shotgun Messiah in the 80's as a guitarist/vocalist. From there he worked by himself in a band called Skold where he was the solo composer. After not making much money on it but still feeling the need to stay underground he joined the legendary father of industrial rock KMFDM (EST. 1984 possibly earlier, for any arguments that may arise). Shortly after that KMFDM broke up and German founder Sasha Koneitzko, American vocalist Lucia Cifarelli, and Tim Skold worked on their own in the new name MDFMK. KMFDM became one again with the other band members. Tim Skold stuck around for one more KMFDM cd and needed to finally make himself known plus actually have some money of his own so he turned to Manson. He sent a 6 song promo cd to Manson and made a great impression. Skold is my favorite artist of all time and I think instead of you seeing him as just some new bassist you should hear some of his stuff. Excellent vocals.
Furthermore, being a musician myself, I've always had a great respect for Manson. Just like Madonna, he makes his own path and lets no one stand in his way. Manson is one of the few artists who can tell the record companies to screw off and do it his own way. |
