I am particularly interested in the dissolution of Muslim marriages in the United States and the concomitant legal issues in terms of both Islamic law as practiced in several Muslim countries and the American judiciary.
The Muslims scholars confirmed that the meaning of “Istamta’tum” is referring to the enjoyment as part of the duties of the legal forms of marriage between a man and his wife.
That such marriages were never frowned upon by Muslims is borne out by the fact that many a Ruler of the Umayad and Abasside as well as of later dynasties.

A number of Muslims I know are not aware that if you have a marriage license and you have a marriage ceremony performed by a recognized imam, that ceremony is recognized by the state.
Other families view marriages between two Muslims as such a preferable alternative to an interfaith marriage, or no marriage at all, that they are supportive of almost any such union.
Muslims have a hard time understanding the Christian marriage relationship, with husbands leading but also loving their wives enough to die for them.

A national summit of all groups in Muslim civil society would be one way of addressing key concerns presented by the legal recognition of Muslim marriages and related issues.
Certainly Muslims who are born in the United States or Canada are more open to marriage outside the narrow restrictions of family or racial-ethnic identities.
