I do not use Masonite, but instead use Oak or Burch plywood for some drawer bottoms or the bottoms of some boxes and cover it with a Velvet Cloth.
As a primer, I combine gesso with acrylic black paint to make a medium gray and paint several coats onto the masonite and sand between each layer.
