I have a 1998 25HP Elec. Mercury. The engine will not idle, will only run at high speed. Compression on top cylinder is 105. Mechanic says cylinder can not be bore. He said the engine is strap and to not buy Mercury or this will occur again. Are the 25HP Mercury's this bad. I also have a 1985 25HP elec that is still running. I need information.

I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks

I have a 25hp mercury motor l999 model after10 hours the stator coil went out, a new coil was installed, after which it seems to run very smooth but after running a few minutes it seems to lack power. all of the regular things have been checked, it still seems to lack power. Is it possible the company might have put the wrong coil in? I have not been able to check the RPMs but sounds low.

I have a 1990, 120 Force inboard/outboard that I have rebult the carbs, replaced all the reeds, set the timing and had it running/starting every time. My friend said lets close all the covers and see what it sounds like. We did this and couldn't get it started again. The manual I have is 'FORCE / Outboards' Service Manual for models 90 and 120 H.P.. The problem I have here is that the wiring diagram is only for the 90hp and the wireing colors don't match for the 120hp. Any suggestion or where can i get a wiring diagram for the 120hp?

I have a 1969 mercury 650. I noticed in all the service manuals that i have read that it is supposed to have two fuel pumps. However, mine has only one. Whats the deal on that? The serial number is 2537955. If anyone know the answer to this puzzling question please e-mail me. my address is jptolman@ida.net thanks.
From:

Answer to jud tomlin. The 650 came with one or two pumps. The 850 had two. You will notice it has provisions for two pumps if you want to drill it out. If all is working well one pump will work fine.P.S. This is a very fine motor.

90 HP Mariner, 1, 3, 5 cylanders will not fire, no spark. 2,4,6 are OK. Replaced the swithchbox module with a new one but 1,3,5 still did not fire. The reason I changed the switchbox was when this first happened I swapped the two original modules and 1,3,5, fired and 2,4,6 did not. Problem solved not, Then with the new module and the original that was good I swapped them and the engine would not start at all. So I went back and placed the wireing in their orginal place and 2,4,6 fired and 1,3,5,did not. any suggestions. Thanks John

For ten years this out board would run on only 4 cylinders of the six until I got out of the harbor and opened it up. Then as if one turn on and electrical switch all cylinders kicked in and the engine ran fine the rest of the day. It now has stopped that and will not run on all cylinders. Using timing light and a water hose connection on my trailer, I found that the number one cylinder fires well up to about 2000 rpm. At that point it becomes intermittent and at higher rpms does not fire at all. I changed both power packs, new plugs coils but the same problem occurs. I also changed the wires. Any Ideas?? Help is greatly appreciated.

I'm working on a 1976 Mercury 4hp outboard that belongs to my brother-in-law. He said it wont crank because it wont come out of gear. I pulled it apart, and the shift lever arm is broken. I found the part online and ordered it. I still can't figure out, though, how this part disingages the prop. I have a newer 4hp Merc , and it has neutral, forward and reverse. I thought this would too, but I can see any way for that to be the case. I don't see from the break down picture online, that any other parts are missing.... Does a 1976, 4hp Merc have neutral ? And if not, what is the shift lever for ?

i have a similar problem as john marinelli, i have a 115 mercury inline 6 that isnt starting, and was laid up for a while...1, 3, 5, cylinders fire but not 2, 4, 6 cylinders top switch box is for 1, 3 and 5 and bottom box is for 2, 4 and 6 i tried swaping the wires from the stator between the two switch boxes but then i get no fire at all...tested all coils, they are all good...someone told me it could be one side of the stator that is bad causing this problem but before i spend 300 buck on a new one i just wanted to ask someone who knows what they are talking about

Joe. I have an old 1970 johnson motor, what appears to be the shift lever is the throttle. Its an old "dock knocker " ran great for over 40 years pushing a 20 sailboat. You might have the same situation with that old merc you are working on. Anyone with ideas or prior similar complaint. Thanks I just bought a 2003 3.3 mercury, leaking gas somewhere Carb ? gasket? I need to look deeper but I thought I'd see what others posted about the motor.

My friend has a 35 hp Mercury outboard. It has a new solenoid and the starter has been changed, not a new one. When you turn the key and try to start it, it sounds like the battery is not charged, it grunts then quits. The battery has been charged and checked. it has 501 cold cranking amps. What could be the problem? Thank you for any and or all help.

I have a 1986 Mercury/Mariner 200. When I engage forward gear, it bangs several times before going into gear. I look back at the motor while its doing this and its moving against the transem with each "bang" (like a slight Jump on each bang). It engages fine when going into reverse, it only does the banging when going into forward. A friend told me it was out of adjustment. Is this the case and how is it adjusted if so? Thanks for any advice.

I have an 84 220 Yamaha v6 special, Ive had the carbs. rebuilt, new gas lines all the way though. I unhooked the Manuel pump and put a 6 pound marine pump, I check and made sure its getting gas, Ive checked it. Put a new stator on it, put a micro computer on it, new thermostats. This problem started out about 3 years ago but it get worse every year. It started out at about 5000 rmps and now is down to about 3000 rpm. it comes out of the hole fine, runs about 60 yards, and then acts like it is running out of gas, but I know its not. If you hold it open, its like you can hear it tries to open back up. It runs fine at about 2800 rpms to 3200 rpms. need help. Please tell me what is wrong with this boat motor. I have put a pulser coil on it, but i have not took it back to the lake yet. Thanks

Hi ive got a 115hp mariner 2000 model. when out on the water, i go to tilt motor up when coming into shallow water. The tilt will stop about half way up, and wont go any further. It will lower and come back to the same point when raised again. using the tilt switch on the motor, seems to over ride the stopping problem on the throttle handle. i havnt had this problem happen at any time, when the biat is out of the water. Have replaced both. relays on the motor. shop has checked throttle tilt switch and is ok.. do you have any suggestions. thank you

2001 mercury 150, I was running @ 3/4 throttle for about 5 min or so and it shut down on me. I didnt hear anything when it did so. When I tried to start it up again all it would do is click at the starter. I just had a fresh rebuild on this motor about 6 months ago and put about 10 hours on smooth break in time. I never had any issues since the rebuild, I only hope its something electricial not mechanical.. Your thought?
