Hi, I live in the Amazon of Colombia and we mostly travel by boat. We have a 40 hp Yamaha and a 15 hp. There is much debris in the river and sometimes the driver hits submerged logs. The "tail" or lower unit of both motors have had teeth broken off and we are repairing them. When we took the drive of the lower casing out, the position of the pin or shift plunger has made us question whether it had previously been put in backwards. One end has a rounded point and the other end is flat. Which end should go into the gear? The other end seems to rest against the housing, right? The shift plunger to the 15 hp has a ridge on it that makes it seem that it should go in rounded end first into the gear. But the 40hp has it with the rounded end out. Does it make a difference in how well it works? The motor seems to work fine now but we don't want to wear the pin or the gears down before necessary. Thanks for your help.

Just bought a 40HP 2000 Yammy 3 cylinder that's been sitting for 2 years. No manual or advice available (owner deceased). It's been winterized. I've replaced the plugs. Fuel tanks empty. Starter with remote works fine. Haven't fired it up yet, its in very good condition (to look at). What precautions should I take when firing it up? How long run in neutral with ear muffs? Stay with 50:1 or go up to 100:1 after a good run?
