Stenciling was used in conjunction with wood block printing and brush painting to create religious pictures and illuminated manuscripts, which were sold to religious pilgrims and shrines.
It is believed that pilgrims applied sheets of damp paper, daubing the surface with ink so that the raised parts showed up; religious seals were also used to transfer pictures and texts of prayers to paper.
