Most recumbents still weigh a few pounds more than standard bicycles and so do suffer to some extent going uphill.

Yes, recumbents are new and different, our experience has been that drivers notice recumbent bicycles, however, recumbents with a higher seating position may be better suited for riding in traffic than some of the low-slung designs.
Because there are so few recumbents on the road drivers actually notice you sooner and give you a wider berth than conventional bikes.
